Where It All Started

Where It All Started

Ashton Salwan’s journey into freestyle aerials began in an unexpected place — a small front-yard pond in Chesterland, Ohio. In 2014, at just ten years old, he started developing air awareness at the Mont Chalet Freestyle Training Center, where upright landings marked early progress and his first flips began to take shape.

A Kid From Cleveland

Under the patient guidance of coach Bill Harris, Ashton spent summer Sundays learning timing and control, one splash at a time. Those early sessions weren’t about results — they were about feel, repetition, and curiosity — quietly laying the groundwork for what would come next.

"First day I ever tried aerials... Flipping off a homemade water ramp. Wearing someone else’s helmet and boots. Hoping I’d land in the water instead of on my face. I didn’t know it then but this was the beginning of everything." ~Ashton Salwan

By age 12, after two summers of water-ramp training, Ashton knew he was ready to transition to snow. He joined the Freestyle Team at Buffalo Ski Center in Colden, New York, under coach Mark DePeters, navigating the demanding shift from water to winter. Freestyle aerial skiing required greater precision, body control, and discipline — skills Ashton continued to develop jump by jump as he adapted to new terrain and conditions.

Building The Foundation

Determined to keep progressing, Ashton added more structure, discipline, and year-round focus to the training regimen shaping his early development.

As competition opportunities expanded, he began traveling to events across the East — from Seven Springs, Pennsylvania, to Sunday River, Maine — gaining valuable experience and steadily building confidence. With each event, his understanding of the sport deepened, and so did his commitment to long-term growth.

Just one week after his 15th birthday, Ashton and his mother made a defining decision: they relocated to Park City, Utah, so he could train year-round. He left behind close friends, a traditional high-school experience, and the familiarity of home in order to pursue consistent development in a high-performance environment.

The Choice That Paid Off

Since that move, Ashton has continued to progress through the sport, earning standout results at FIS Junior World Championships, NorAm Cups, Europa Cups, and FIS World Cups. Each season has brought new experience, personal bests, and growing contributions within Team USA.

What remains constant is the work ethic that carried him from a front yard pond to the international stage. Every jump reflects years of steady discipline, patience, and belief — the foundation behind every successful takeoff.

"Every leap begins with belief... Trust the process, embrace the challenge, and let your passion take flight." ~Ashton Salwan

In a sport defined by courage, precision, and resilience, Ashton remains focused on continued progress and on leaving freestyle aerials better than he found it.
